Update: The Sense8 trailer has been released! Watch it here.
This year has seen its fair share of thought-provoking science-fiction films, and it seems that Netflix is keen on continuing the trend through its online platform. Sense8 will be Netflix’s maiden voyage into science-fiction, and with a June 5th release date confirmed, the geek world is abuzz with rumors, expectations, and an overdose of anticipation.
The minds behind Sense8 are no strangers to the world of sci-fi, of course. Andy and Lana Wachowski, the creators of the Matrix trilogy, will be directing the project alongside Cloud Atlas director Tom Tykwer. James McTeigue of V for Vendetta and visual effects coordinator Dan Glass are also confirmed to be on the directorial team. And, as if the influence of these icons wasn’t enough, the series was created and written with the help of Babylon 5’s J. Michael Straczynski.
The Internet Movie Database summarizes the series as “A group of people around the world are suddenly linked mentally, and must find a way to survive being hunted by those who see them as a threat to the world’s order.” A Comic-Con panel also revealed that themes of fear, sexuality, and gender would appear throughout Sense8.
Sense8’s cast of characters is diverse and massive in scope, ranging from a Kenyan bus driver to an actor. All eight of the lead characters are supposedly in their twenties, according to Straczynski, and filming took place in locations as varied as Berlin and Nairobi. No matter where the crew films, however, the Wachowski siblings are sure to turn the world of Sense8 into another dimension entirely.
Sense8 hits the net on June 5th.
